Historical Note

The Northwestern University Settlement Association was founded in 1891 by a group of administrators and faculty from Northwestern University in order to provide social services, educational programs, referrals, and emergency relief to a poor immigrant neighborhood on Chicago's near northwest side. In 1901, after three moves, the Settlement was established in the building at 1400 West Augusta where it continues to operate as a community center.

The North Shore Junior Board of the Northwestern University Settlement was organized in 1937 by young women from the North side of Chicago and from the suburbs along the North Shore with the special purpose of generating support for the Settlement Camp, the House in the Woods. In addition to assisting with Camp programs, the North Shore Junior Board also supports other Settlement projects. The President of the North Shore Junior Board is a member of the Executive Committee of the Settlement Board. The Greater Chicago Antiques Show and Sale is the annual fund raising project of the North Shore Junior Board. Other activities include the Children's Benefit League of Chicago and the Suburbs and a Santa Claus Benefit.

For additional historical background on the Settlement, see the historical summary which forms a part of the descriptive inventory for Series 41/1, the General Administrative Records. See also the informal history prepared for the Settlement's centennial, <emph render="italic">The Worn Doorstep</emph>, by Mark Wukas (Chicago: Northwestern University Settlement Association, 1991).

Arrangement of Materials

The records' original arrangement, in alphabetical order by subject, was retained, but several large, coherent categories were separated from the General Administrative Files, organized separately, and assigned their own series numbers. See separation record for specific details.

Scope and Contents

The records in this series are organized alphabetically by subject. All records have been removed from the original three-ringed binders. Boxes 1-4 contain Administrative Notebooks, 1959-1983. These notebooks, maintained by the Board President, include meeting agendas and minutes, correspondence, treasurer's reports, financial records, tax letters, and committee notes.

The Benefit Committee records, 1978-1986 (boxes 5-6) include secretary, treasurer, and chairman reports, meeting agendas and minutes, correspondence, and files relating to publicity and patrons. The Benefit Committee records also include substantial information regarding the Antiques Show and Sale and the benefit dinner, “Guess Who's Cooking the Dinner!” All publications for the benefit dinner were under the charge of the Graphics and Program Committee.

Boxes 8-10 contain the President's Books, 1980-1986. Similar to the Administrative Notebooks, these include guidelines, calendars, meeting minutes, correspondence, officer's reports, and files relating to the Central Committee and the Benefit Committee.

The Publicity records, 1969-1977 (boxes 10-11) contain annual reports, yearbook materials, press releases, and clippings. The 1986 Treasurer's Record Book (box 11) includes income tax returns, reports, minutes, statements of expenses, contribution lists, financial assistance requests, and audit reports.

<emph render="bold">Description of the Addition (Boxes 12-14)</emph>: This addition contains records of the North Shore Junior Board, 1942-1988. The records are arranged alphabetically by subject. All records have been removed from the original binding.

The Administrative Records (box 12) include annual reports, tax forms, correspondence, lists of officers and members, and meeting minutes.

Box 13 contains records relating to the purchase of property in Lake Delavan, Wisconsin for use by the House in the Wood Camp. These records include the zone ordinance, lease agreements, sales contracts, correspondence, and the abstract of the title.

The Secretary's files (box 14) include schedules of meetings, membership lists, and officer's reports.
